What the Heck Is Plot Twists?

Great question. Plot Twists is the new Substack email newsletter that will feature a new short story written by me and released every Thursday.

For you, I hope Plot Twists represents a bite-sized literary entertainment break. A satisfying (🤞🏻) moment spent consuming art. An escape from your busy week to disappear into a new world of story.

Say It Again, Slowly

More details on what to expect:

🌸 one short story will be delivered to your inbox every Thursday. These emails will be straightforward – a short intro from me, then the story itself in the body of the email
🌸 stories will range in genre and format: fiction, romance, action, personal essays, a screenplay, more
🌸 preview chapters from some of my full-length novels will be included
🌸 usually the material will be pretty short, a one-sitting read
🌸 these won’t all be perfectly polished gems, some works in progress!

My Goal
Ultimately, I’m working toward publishing full-length fiction novels – landing an agent, selling manuscripts to publishers, hosting national book tours, helping produce eventual film and tv adaptations. My vision is expansive.

To prepare, I need well-written material and an audience hungry to read that work.

The practice of writing one short story a week holds many purposes, including:

🩵 redeveloping my creative muscles and habit after years of neglect and before I dive back into my novels
🩵 testing and honing my many stories, ideas and genre interests – both by simply getting them on paper and incorporating your feedback to get a full picture
🩵 practicing pitching a story by composing compelling hooks that make you want to read the piece
🩵 building an audience interested in my writing

You are now on this journey with me, so I wanted you to understand where we’re headed!

Behind the Name

As an Enneagram 7 and publicist who reframes things to the positive, I declare the phrase “plot twist!” when things go wrong at work or in life, with hopes of injecting levity and intrigue. A plot twist keeps you on your toes, changes the trajectory of a story, and, to me, inherently sounds fun.

Short stories often distill to a particularly clever plot twist, so this collection of shorts feels like a collection of plot twists.
